Does WhatsApp have native reminders?
Not for your tasks. WhatsApp is for chatting: it will not tell you the electricity bill is due tomorrow at 9:00 AM, and it will never circle back to ask whether you paid it. So almost everyone improvises, and each workaround solves one part of the problem while leaving another uncovered.
Messaging yourself
Easy, and it is already on your phone. But the message sits in a list with 40 other chats: nothing buzzes, nothing warns you, and you only see it if you remember to look. It works as a note, not as a reminder.
Alarm or calendar app
Rings at the exact time, which is great for fixed appointments. The weakness is that you swipe it away and keep doing what you were doing. It rings once and disappears, and every new app is one more to abandon.
How do I set a reminder on WhatsApp?
Send a message or a voice note to Sofia, the ASB assistant that lives on WhatsApp, saying what and when: "remind me to pay the electricity bill tomorrow at 9". She confirms the time she understood, creates the reminder and nudges you at the agreed moment, in the same chat.
- Say "hi" to Sofia on WhatsApp.
- Type or speak the reminder in your own words, with the repeat if there is one ("every 10th").
- Confirm the time she understood.
- Reply "done" when it is done, or ask to snooze ("in an hour").
There is no form and no date format to get right. You write the way you would talk to a person.
What does Sofia do that an alarm does not?
She insists. If you do not reply, she comes back later, and you settle it right there with "done", "snooze an hour" or "cancel". She takes voice notes, which helps when your hands are full, and turns "every 10th" or "every 8 hours" into a routine without any settings screen.
That matters most if you have ADHD. The problem is rarely knowing what to do; it is the alert arriving, getting dismissed "just for a minute", and never coming back.
What does Sofia's reminder not do?
It does not call you, does not text you by SMS and does not talk to your Google Calendar or other apps. Everything happens as messages on WhatsApp (and Discord), so if your phone is on silent, the nudge waits like any other message. And no tool can reply for you: a reminder only works if you answer it.
I have ADHD and I abandoned every reminder app I installed. I built ASB so the nudge shows up where I already am and comes back when I ignore it. If you also swipe alarms away without noticing, read why ordinary reminders fail and what works instead.
Frequently asked questions
Does WhatsApp have reminders?
Not for your tasks. WhatsApp is built for chatting, so it will not warn you when it is time to pay a bill or call someone back. Your options are messaging yourself, using an alarm or calendar app, or using an assistant like Sofia, who creates the reminder inside WhatsApp itself.
How do I set a reminder on WhatsApp?
Send Sofia a message or a voice note saying what and when, for example "remind me to pay the electricity bill tomorrow at 9". She confirms the time she understood and nudges you at the agreed moment, in the same chat.
Can I create a reminder with a voice note?
Yes. Talk however it comes out and Sofia transcribes it, then picks up the time, the person involved and any repetition. It helps when you are walking or your hands are busy.
What if I ignore the reminder?
Sofia nudges you again later. You can reply "done", ask to snooze ("in an hour") or cancel, all in the same chat. The point is that the reminder does not vanish like an alarm you swipe away.
Do I need to install an app to get the reminders?
No. Reminders arrive in the WhatsApp you already have. There is also a web app if you want it, and you can start for free, no card needed.
